FORD PERFORMANCE TO BUILD NEW MUSTANG RACE CAR

Ford Performance have commenced with the building of a brand new GT3 race car for global competition

The Ford Mustang is set to lead Ford’s return to global sports car racing as Ford Performance prepares a new GT3 race car for competition, starting in 2024.

Ford Performance has revealed that they will enter the car in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) 2024 race season, including the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports will see a two-car factory team as well as customer race cars start at Daytona in 2024.

With 58 years of global endurance racing heritage, including NASCAR and Australian Supercars, Ford Performance are ready to take the Mustang to the next level and compete in the GT3 class against the greatest manufacturers in the world.

The new Mustang GT3 racer will be powered by a Ford 5.0-litre Coyote based V8 engine developed by Ford Performance and built by M-Sport. M-Sport has a long-standing relationship with Ford in other forms of motorsport, including the World Rally Championship. The engine is set to continue the heritage of naturally aspirated V8 engines in the Mustang platform.

The new Mustang GT3 race car will feature custom made Short-Long Arm suspension at the front and rear, a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, carbon fibre body panels, as well as a unique aero package developed to meet GT3 targets.

New Mustang GT4 on the way too

Although the Mustang GT3 is a new project, Ford have confirmed that the successful Mustang GT4 customer race program will continue into the future, with a new variation expected to debut ahead of the 2023 season.

These new Mustang announcements for sports car racing add to a series of new racing Mustangs that are expected to break cover this year. The 2022 Next Gen Ford Mustang will debut in the NASCAR Cup series on Feb 6 at the LA Coliseum and then at the Daytona 500 two weeks later. Ford Performance is also developing their new Gen 3 Mustang for the Supercars Series that will debut at the start of 2023.
